  3. The legend of the witches…

Some mountains impress with their height, others with their difficulty, but only a few manage to capture the collective soul of a region. Pedraforca is a unique example. With its unmistakable fork-shaped silhouette, this mountain, located in the heart of Berguedà, is not only a landscape symbol but also a place deeply rooted in the popular imagination. Among all the stories surrounding it, the legend of the witches of Pedraforca is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and evocative.

The story, passed down orally for generations, forms part of the intangible heritage of Saldes, the village nestled at the foot of the massif, which has witnessed, both literally and symbolically, the mysteries attributed to the mountain. The legend blends historical, religious, and magical elements, transforming Pedraforca into a stage where good and evil, faith and darkness, clash in an epic battle.

An enchanted castle in Saracen times

The legend transports us to a distant era, when these lands were under Saracen rule. According to ancient tales, one night the inhabitants of Saldes heard strange and unsettling noises coming from the mountain. Upon leaving their homes, they were awestruck to see how, atop Pedraforca, a magnificent fortress suddenly rose, a mysterious castle unlike any that had ever existed before.

The haunted castle was inhabited by strange and dark beings who, allied with the Saracens, mercilessly attacked any Christian who dared to cross that territory. Arrows rained down from the heights, turning the paths into places of danger and death. Fear spread rapidly among the population, who watched as the mountain, once protective and familiar, transformed into a cursed place.

Divine intervention and the birth of Pedraforca

Faced with this supernatural threat, the Christians of the area decided to ask for divine help. According to legend, their prayers were heard, and God sent Saint Michael to Earth accompanied by a group of angels. On the night of December 31st, more than a thousand years ago, the final confrontation took place between the forces of heaven and the inhabitants of the enchanted castle.

The battle was so powerful that the mountain itself was transformed. The castle was destroyed, and the summit of the massif acquired its characteristic shape, as if a divine force had split it into two separate peaks, called Pollegó Superior and Calderer, by a great fork. According to tradition, this is the origin of the name Pedraforca. This episode not only explained the mountain's unique morphology but also reinforced the idea that Pedraforca was a place marked by the action of supernatural forces.

Despite the castle's destruction, legend says its presence never truly vanished. Every year, on the night of December 31st, known as Saint Sylvester's Eve, witches would gather at Pedraforca to commemorate the existence of this enchanted castle. This date, already laden with symbolism as it marked the transition from one year to the next, became a moment of connection with the otherworld.

According to popular belief, the witches of Pedraforca were not merely malevolent beings, but figures linked to ancient knowledge of nature, secret rituals, and forbidden wisdom. It was said that they danced around the fire, invoked spirits, and used mountain herbs to brew mysterious potions. This vision, a blend of fear and fascination, has endured to this day.

Pedraforca, a magical mountain

Over time, Pedraforca became known as the "magic mountain" of Catalonia. Hikers, climbers, and visitors seek not only a sporting challenge or spectacular scenery, but also an almost spiritual experience. Some claim to feel a special energy upon reaching the pass, as if the mountain held the memory of all the stories that have been told.

The magnetism of Pedraforca has fueled new legends, contemporary stories, and symbolic interpretations. It is often seen as a space of transformation, a place where the past and present converse, and where nature commands an almost sacred respect.

Legend and tourism: an experience with soul

Today, the legend of the Pedraforca witches has become a valuable cultural and tourist resource. Guided routes, family activities, and cultural tourism options allow visitors to discover the mountain from a different perspective, combining history, nature, and local folklore. For visitors, learning the legend while hiking the trails of the massif gives every rock and every shadow a new meaning.

Pedraforca is not just a mountain to climb, but a story to experience. And perhaps it is precisely this combination of natural beauty and ancient mystery that continues to fascinate all who approach it, year after year. Amidst mists, peaks, and tales of witches, Pedraforca continues to watch over Berguedà, reminding us that there are places where legend still breathes.
