International Festival of Popular and Traditional Music of Vilanova

In 1981, at a time when root and traditional music was taking its place, and due to the interest in this music, among citizens, the commission for investigation and promotion of popular culture, organizer of the Festival, He decides to organize a series of concerts within the framework of the Festival, from which the FIMPT in Vilanova i la Geltrú arose.

A few years later, this initiative is disassociated from the Festival, takes on its own character, and becomes one of the most important cultural activities of the Vilanova summer.

The FIMPT (International Festival of Popular and Traditional Music) was born as an initiative that was ahead of its time and pioneering. It breaks borders for the recovery and normalization of traditional popular music in Catalonia, and is key to its dissemination, offering and making music, sounds, instruments and cultures from all over the world known. The festival becomes a benchmark in our country and also in the field of festivals throughout Europe.

The FIMPT is the oldest international festival of traditional popular music, world music or folk music in Catalonia and the entire Spanish state; and one of the oldest at a European level. The FIMPT has played a transcendental role by putting our traditional music in contact with those of its environment, making known the richness of traditional music from all over, then absolutely unknown, and managing to create an increasingly numerous and faithful audience to these types. root music.

The 80s and 90s are, without a doubt, the years of greatest splendor for the festival, at all levels, adapting to each moment, and is still alive today.
