Festival of Saint Lucia in Gelida

Once again, we invite you to enjoy Santa Llucía Day in Gelida!

A festive day with the escudella as the protagonist, accompanied by traditional dances, a craft fair and the sardana dance in the church square. It is also a charity celebration dedicated to those who need it most. This year, the festival begins at the weekend with various activities, music and concerts.

The feast of Saint Lucia has adapted over time, keeping the tradition alive and consolidating itself as a liturgical festival with strong popular roots. The central point of the celebration is in the church square, where a large stew is cooked and distributed among all the attendees. As early as the 18th century, a mass dedicated to the Saint was celebrated in the church of the Castle, which housed an altarpiece (preserved) and a painting of her (partially preserved).

In 1855 the Brotherhood of Mutual Benefit of Santa Llúcia was founded, and the first written reference to the festival is found at the beginning of the 20th century, when Mosén FX Raventós Vendrell mentioned to the Parish Consueta that the escudella was distributed, known then as the "soup of the poor". During the Civil War (1936-1939), the festival was interrupted, but in 1939 it was revived with a new image of the Saint and thanks to a Commission of volunteers who, year after year, have maintained the tradition of the escudella.
