August 27th is World Lakes Day, a day that invites us to value these ecosystems, essential to life, and to discover their natural beauty and cultural importance. In Catalonia, lakes are much more than landscapes: they are spaces of ecological balance, sustainable tourism, and connection with nature.
One of the most iconic is Lake Banyoles, the largest natural lake in Catalonia. With crystal-clear waters and abundant biodiversity, it offers an ideal setting for walking, canoeing, or simply relaxing. It has also witnessed human history for thousands of years, with Neolithic remains found in its surroundings.
In the heart of the Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, high mountain lakes become natural gems surrounded by towering peaks and lush forests. Lake Sant Maurici, with the silhouette of the Encantats in the background, is an iconic image of the Catalan Pyrenees.
