12 August
This event is over.

On August 12, 2026, Catalonia will experience a total solar eclipse, an exceptional astronomical phenomenon that has not occurred in the region since August 30, 1905. For a few moments, the Moon will completely cover the Sun, transforming day into sudden darkness and creating a visual and emotional experience that will be hard to forget. Its significance is even greater because, after this date, another total solar eclipse will not be visible in Catalonia until November 17, 2180.

The eclipse will take place at dusk, approximately between 7:30 and 9:00 p.m., coinciding with sunset. The path of totality will cross mainly the southern third of Catalonia, especially areas of Tarragona and Lleida. In these locations, the total phase could last up to a minute and a half. In Barcelona and Girona, however, the phenomenon will be seen as a partial eclipse, although it will also cause a noticeable decrease in light and a very special atmosphere.

Visibility will depend heavily on the chosen location, as the sun will be very low, less than five degrees above the horizon. Therefore, it will be essential to find open spaces with a clear view to the west and no obstructions such as buildings, mountains, or trees. Some recommended towns are Tarragona, Salou, Cambrils, Reus, Valls, Móra la Nova, Gandesa, Amposta, L'Ametlla de Mar, Les Borges Blanques, and Lleida. Altafulla, Torredembarra, and El Vendrell could also be good options.

The eclipse will not be just a visual spectacle. As the Moon passes in front of the Sun, the light will change color, the temperature may drop slightly, and some animals might react as if night were falling. At the moment of totality, the solar corona will be visible, and perhaps some stars or planets.

Safety will be paramount. During the partial phases, it will be necessary to use certified sunglasses with ISO 12312-2 solar filter or indirect observation systems. Only during the entire event, within the designated viewing area, will it be possible to view it with the naked eye. The event will also be a great tourist opportunity to discover the Terres de l'Ebre, the Costa Daurada, and the interior of Tarragona and Lleida. Beaches, natural viewpoints, charming villages, and protected areas will become prime locations for observation. It will be a chance to combine science, nature, and excitement, and to experience a brief but memorable moment shared by many people across the country. It is advisable to plan your arrival in advance, as large crowds are expected, primarily at the best viewing locations.
