Gandesa

Gandesa is right in the center of its region, the Terra Alta, which is capital and is surrounded by mountains. It is located exactly at the foot of the highest peak in the region, Puig Cavaller. In fact, its name comes from the Iberian and means walled roots below the mountain. And like all place names gives us references of its geography.

The site of the Coll del Moro, corresponding to the ilercavones Iberian tribe, is a clear indication that the human presence in this area existed since 800 BC. However, there is no such town in written documents until 1153. this date corresponds to the time when Ramon Berenguer IV took delivery of the castle to the order of the Templars.
Although during the first half of the fourteenth century this term was territory of around hospitaleros.

Gandesa possibly due to its good position in the territory, which facilitates good communication thing, has had to endure several wars. Among them was the scene of the first Carlist War, which highlighted for its strength, and the Battle of the Ebro. For this reason there stood Studies Centre of the Battle of the Ebro which has become a historical museum on Spanish Civil War.

Gandesa heritage known for its splendid modernist Agricultural Cooperative and work of César Martinell. It also preserves a building known as Palau Templar Castellá which over the years has had various functionalities. The church of Mare de Deu de l'Assumpció, transitional Romanesque Gothic, known for its gate. Another building that exemplifies Gothic works is the Palau de Ca l'Inquisitor.

As regards the natural environment allows us to make multiple trips on the Puig Cavaller, the Coll d'en Canar, Fontcalda (mineral water source) and the riu Caneletes, the Serra de Pàndols, the recreational area of the fonteta, among others.

Among the different reputations that has received highlights "Gandesa farce" that affects the marriage between the heir to the Crown of Aragon and the daughter of Ferdinand IV of Castile and married in this county.
