Església de Sant Joan de Caselles Canillo
The church of Sant Joan de Caselles is a true gem of Andorran Romanesque architecture, dating from between the 11th and 12th centuries. This church is characterized by its austere and harmonious architecture, with a rectangular nave covered in wood, a semicircular apse, and a slender Lombard bell tower that stands as a distinctive feature in the Canillo landscape.
Over the centuries, the building has undergone transformations, as evidenced by the porches added between the 15th and 16th centuries, which provide tangible evidence of its evolution and the welcoming function it performed in times of adverse weather.
Inside, the imposing 12th-century stucco Majesty stands out, an exceptional piece of Pyrenean Romanesque sculpture, preserved in conjunction with a mural painting from the same period. This painting depicts the crucifixion scene, with figures such as Longí and Esteve, as well as the sun and moon, symbols of the duality between day and night, life and death. The work stands out both for its technique, which combines painting and sculpture, and for its style, which presents unique characteristics compared to other paintings from the same period.
Behind the altar railing, a magnificent 16th-century Renaissance altarpiece is displayed, one of the most important pieces of modern art in Andorra. This work, with Italian and Germanic influences, features a rich iconography dedicated to the life of Saint John the Evangelist, the church's patron saint.
The combination of elements of Gothic tradition with Renaissance features makes it a representative piece of the evolution of forms, colors, and iconography in art.
Outside, the remains of an ancient medieval cemetery surround this architectural complex, recalling its function as a place of worship and spiritual contemplation for generations. This setting, combined with the austerity and beauty of the building, makes Sant Joan de Caselles a place of great historical, artistic, and heritage value.
