  3. The legend of the Drac…

Some dragons are born from ancient books and medieval legends, while others are born from fire, festivities, and popular imagination. The Caramot of El Vendrell is one of the latter, a colossal beast that today forms part of the festive soul of El Vendrell and, over time, has become one of the most spectacular fire-breathing dragons in Europe.

Its story blends fantasy, humor, and folk tradition, like all good legends.

The little dragon that wasn't scary

They say that many years ago, in some caves near El Vendrell, lived a small dragon named Caramot. He was small, quiet, and somewhat clumsy. His mother suffered constantly because she saw him as too weak to survive in a world of fire-breathing beasts.

The other dragons in the region mocked him. While they breathed fire and terrified everyone in their path, Caramot could barely manage a puff of smoke. The peasants didn't even run away when they saw him coming.

"This one will never scare anyone," they said, laughing.

His mother, however, did not give up. She prepared food for him, made him train, and encouraged him every day to learn to breathe fire.

The transformation of Caramot

And so, slowly, the little dragon began to change.

Year after year it grew bigger, stronger, and fiercer. The flames burned brighter in its throat, its wings seemed larger, and its tail made the earth tremble as it walked.

Until one day, to everyone's surprise, Caramot turned into an immense beast.

Measuring over twenty meters long and weighing hundreds of kilos, it was no longer the little dragon everyone laughed at. Now it was a monumental creature, capable of filling the streets with fire and sparks.

The entire region was speechless.

The fire dragon of El Vendrell

Over time, Caramot became the protector and festive symbol of El Vendrell. Every year, during the Santa Anna Festival, he parades through the streets surrounded by fire, music, and smoke, filling the squares and alleyways with life amidst the nighttime processions.

As it advances through the sparks, it seems to awaken an ancient force. Its gigantic mouth spews fire while dozens of pyrotechnic points illuminate the night. The crowd runs, dances, and hides under a shower of sparks that transforms the celebration into an almost infernal spectacle.

The Caramot is not just a festive beast, it is part of the identity of the people.

Between legend and popular culture

Although the story has a fantastical tone, Caramot also has a true history. The current figure was created in 1984 by a group of residents of El Vendrell with a passion for fire and folk culture. Constructed from iron and fiberglass, it quickly became one of the largest fire-breathing beasts in Europe.

Over the years, the dragon has traveled to fire runs and festivals throughout Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Portugal, always carrying the festive spirit of El Vendrell. Today, it remains a central part of the town's popular culture.

The legend of Caramot speaks of perseverance, of a small dragon that seemed destined to be insignificant and that, with perseverance, ended up becoming an extraordinary creature.

Perhaps that's why the story has taken such deep root in El Vendrell, because behind the flames and the spectacle there is a very human idea: that even the smallest ones can end up leaving a mark.

And so, every summer, when night falls and fire illuminates the streets of El Vendrell, Caramot awakens once more. He is no longer that insecure dragon of the caves; now he is the great fire dragon that makes the whole town tremble.
