Chestnut trees of Can Caselles (Santa Pau)
On the way to the Santa Margarida volcano crater, there's a stop that invites you to calmly admire the landscape: the three chestnut trees of Can Caselles. Located in the municipality of Santa Pau, these specimens stand out for their size and are yet another attraction to discover during your walk through La Garrotxa.
To find them, follow route 1 of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, heading towards the crater. Once past the hamlet of Can Caselles, you'll see them on your left, on the other side of a sheepfold. It's a good spot to stop and admire them, respecting the fence and the surrounding area.
The third chestnut tree also holds a curious detail: in one of the dead branches of the crown, woodpecker holes were observed, a small trace of the fauna that inhabits this environment.
The value of these specimens led the Parks Service of the Generalitat of Catalonia to emphasize the need to protect them by declaring them monumental trees. One more reason to take a closer look at them before continuing towards the volcano.
