Why a Pilgrimage Walk is Different from Hiking

Pilgrimage walks and hiking are two distinct outdoor activities that are often conflated. While both may seem similar at first glance, such as walking a long distance for the fun of it, the intent behind each experience sets them apart. This article will take a look at the differences between the two.

Purpose and Intent

Pilgrimage walks are often undertaken with a slightly different purpose, which could be spiritual, religious or simply a personal growth mission. But most importantly, these journeys are typically tied to historical or religious significance. One example of this is the Camino de Santiago in Spain, which has been a Christian pilgrimage route for centuries. Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the remains of Saint James the Apostle are said to be buried, is one of the many things you will come across along this walk.

This is very different to the desire of hiking through northern Sweden or the Midwest of the US. This may be more about the nature and getting away from the city, or simply an endeavour of exercise and perseverance.

Destinations and Routes

Pilgrimage routes are often steeped in history and spiritual importance. The routes are often closer to civilisation, because their intent isn't about diving deep into nature or the wilderness. Hiking is often going off the beaten path (though not always), while the essence of a pilgrim walk is that it was once a common path.

For example, the pilgrimage to Mecca, known as the Hajj, is a sacred journey for Muslims, following in the footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad. Because popular hiking trails are chosen for their scenic beauty or physical challenge, they're often more remote and potentially more challenging, either through mountains or tough terrain. The Appalachian Trail in the United States and the Pacific Crest Trail in the western United States are renowned for their stunning but demanding terrain.

Community and Solitude

Pilgrimage walks often create a sense of community among participants who share a common purpose. Even if there is no purpose, the pilgrimage walk is likely going to be more social, and you're more likely to meet fellow walkers. Pilgrims may walk together, share meals, and support one another along the way.

In contrast, hiking can be a solitary activity or a way to spend time with friends. But, the routes are typically more remote, and while hikers may enjoy each other's company, the focus is often on the physical challenge and or indulging the wilderness.

Physical and Mental Preparation

Generally, hiking is more demanding and requires greater preparation. If we take the Camino de Santiago as an example, there is a wide range of routes from easy to difficult. But, regardless of the one you take, you will not be 100km from the closest shop at any point like you might on a US hike.

Religious pilgrimage walks may involve more preparation in a spiritual context, but generally it is hikers who must ensure they are extremely fit and pack very sensibly, possibly with a satellite cell phone, medical kit, and so on.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while pilgrimage walks and hiking may appear similar on the surface, they are fundamentally different experiences. It's true that they can overlap and their categorisations are not all that important. But, what is important is to self-reflect on the type of journey you're looking for. Is it a historical one, where you will meet others venturing through charming villages with some nature spliced in-between; or do you want a feeling of never-ending nature that pushes you to your limit?
