Guided tour of the Séquia Major of Vila-seca

In the Vila-seca destination, La Pineda Platja, is the Séquia Major, a natural area protected by the Pla d'Espais d'Interès Natural (PEIN) of the Generalitat of Catalonia, since 1992. This area of 17.3 hectares is the wetland of greatest interest between the Llobregat Delta and the Ebre Delta.

The Séquia Major arises from the sandy sediments provided by the Francolí River, forming this part of its delta. The lagoons in the area were fed by natural springs of fresh water and, in turn, by seepage and flooding of sea water. This alternation between types of water results in a notable diversity of environments and biodiversity, including endangered species such as the “fartet” fish and the European water turtle.

Originally, these lands were destined for agriculture thanks to the richness of their land, although due to continuous flooding, they were difficult to cultivate. In 1537, the Séquia Major was built to drain the land in addition to hydrological regulation systems, such as the Caseta de les Xibeques, giving the possibility of continuing with this activity until the beginning of the 20th century.

Currently, agricultural activity has been abandoned, the area has recovered its natural appearance of wet meadows, reed beds and lagoons that give a unique attraction to your visit. Here the history and its natural value are explained in detail while walking along the walkways that facilitate access. In addition, you can observe birds and other protected species using binoculars.

Guided tours are free and suitable for all ages. Times are:
