Vall-llobrega

The municipality of Vall-llobrega, with almost 900 inhabitants, is located at the foot of the Les Gavarres mountains and, at the same time, very close to the sea.

The Raval de Baix or Raval de Mar is in the middle of the lower part of the valley and constitutes the center of the municipality: the church of Sant Mateu, the rectory, the old schools and the town hall are concentrated here. Its houses, from the 17th and 18th centuries, are aligned longitudinally to one side of the road.

The church of San Mateo de Vall-llobrega, the current parish of Raval de Baix, has a single nave with two side chapels and a polygonal chancel. The ruins of the old church of Sant Mateu are located on a plateau at the head of the valley, less than 2 km northwest of Raval de Dalt. This Romanesque church, probably from the 11th century, must have been abandoned when the new parish was built in Raval de Baix.

From the plain of Vall-llobrega there are paths and solitary trails that allow you to climb the first mountains and mountains of the Gavarres, towards the Fitor sector. As you gain height, an excellent perspective opens up over the plain while, in the second line, not far away, the ribbon of the sea becomes wider and wider. The place name of the municipality derives from the Latin name Vallis Rubrica, which means red valley (or valley of red earth).
