Ultramort

Ultra-dead, it is located on a high place from which it overlooks, to the north, east and south, a wide expanse of fertile farmland reclaimed from the waters that once occupied the area. In the extreme north, the term of the municipality is extended until touching the river Ter, in an area that, in rainy seasons, is still easily flooded.

In the town of Ultramort, made up of about sixty houses, we can distinguish two sectors separated by the square: the original nucleus, in the vicinity of the church, and, to the north, two long suburbs whose name – Calle de Torroella and Calle de Figueres – points the direction of two old paths. The most notable building is the church, dedicated to Santa Eulalia and dating from the 13th century. The different rehabilitation works that have been carried out in recent years mean that, today, we can contemplate a type of church considered by specialists as an example of an austere Romanesque style, with Cistercian influence and typical of small rural towns.

A walk through the quiet streets of the town allows you to discover, in some of the houses, interesting architectural elements. At one end of the square, at a point higher than the neighboring buildings, there is currently a house that integrates the remains of the old village castle: it is the Gleu castle, popularly known as the Finestres castle.
