Torrent

Torrent is a small town where you can see the remains of an old castle mentioned in medieval documents.

The core is made up of around thirty houses grouped around the parish church. There are some very short, narrow lanes and a large esplanade or plaza outside the medieval gate (still standing) of the castle grounds.

Although it has been documented since the 14th century, the parish church of Sant Vicenç as we know it today was built in the 18th century. It is a building of considerable size, with a single nave, with side chapels and a polygonal apse. The bell tower is a square tower.

Another point of interest in the town is the hermitage of Sant Llop, from the 18th century, which is located in a fairly high place and far from the center of the population. It has a Greek cross floor plan with a square head and a dome. Every year, for Santa Llúcia, a meeting is held that brings together many people from the surrounding area.

It is also worth mentioning a large megalithic tomb, which is elevated on the Red Mountain and popularly known as the “Moorish cemetery”. It is one of the largest covered gallery dolmens located in Catalonia.

In the past, the old narrow-gauge train that linked Girona and Palamós passed through Torrent. This line was closed definitively in 1956, and vestiges have remained in the town, such as the bridges over which the train crossed the torrents and streams, the old route, etc.
