The frescoes of the Church of Santa Maria del Alba
This church dedicated to Santa Maria del Alba from the 12th century, was the subject of important reforms during the 13th and 14th centuries, such as the construction of a bell tower and a Gothic portal, with the 12 apostles sculpted on the jambs, similar to those of the Seu Vella of Lleida. In 1672 the fall of the bell tower on the temple forced the construction of a new church.
Currently, the temple, with classicist lines, gives spectacularity to all perspectives of the square. The floor plan has a main nave with side chapels, dome and dome, decorated with frescoes by the Targarine artists Jaume Minguell Miret and his son Josep Minguell Cardenyes, with allegorical themes from the Holy Scriptures.
The square bell tower with an octagonal tower is tall and houses a significant number of bells. The façade was completed at the beginning of the 20th century, with the installation on the façade of a baroque decorative set, originally intended as an access door to the heart.
If you visit Tàrrega you cannot forget to go through the Plaza Mayor and enjoy the façade and bell tower of the Church and remember that if you want to enter you can see the spectacular decoration of fresco paintings found in this church declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
