Santa Margarida i els Monjos

Santa Margarida i els Monjos is a municipality located in the south-east of the Alt Penedès region, in the Pre-coastal depression, and is across the Foix River. Tea 17.39 km ² of surface.

The municipality, located approximately 170 meters above sea level, maintains a balance between the flat and the mountain and is formatted by a series of small urban centers and small neighborhoods, with the most important being Els Monjos, La Ràpita and Cal Rubió, in addition to various farms distributed throughout the municipal geography.

Our municipality includes many beautiful natural resources: the Font de Sant Llorenç, the Pins Alts forest, the Torrent de Cal Bruna, the Foix river... all of them deserve a special walk that awakens pleasant sensations.

There are traces of various eras: Iberian, Roman, Arab... testimonies of local populations with a constant presence in the area, motivated by the proximity to the important Iberian nucli of Olèrdola and the Via Augusta country.

El pas del temps has revealed the seva also through various elements that make up a history and a rich heritage, which the visitor can discover all the passers-by. Among the most important are the Castell de Penyafort,   the Foix mill, the Penyafel hermitage, the many vestiges related to the Spanish civil war, the anti-aircraft shelters, the Ciarga, an ancient aviation camp, prisoners, aircraft muntatge ships, etc.

All of them are located in the region of Alt Penedès, a wine-growing region with the landscape and climate accompanying the gaudir of good states.

With this visit we encourage you to discover the heritage construction that best explains the historical evolution of the municipality of Santa Margarida i els Monjos, the Penyafort castle. During the s. XI, at the level of the Castell d'Olèrdola, a stone tower was erected to protect the land conquered by the Muslims of Al-Andalus. From the keys, a church, a convent, a residence of the industrial bourgeoisie and finally a prisoner dependent on the republican aviation during the Civil War, they have been attached to the original fortification donated to the current polièdric and rich architectural complex. With this visit we undertake a long journey at the time when we begin the Catalan regional reconquest, to continue with the implementation of the Catholic counter-reform, the confiscations and the industrial revolution, ending the esclat of the war in 1936 and the subsequent arrival of the first American tourists.
