Santa Margarida i els Monjos

Santa Margarida i els Monjos is a municipality located in the southeast of the Alt Penedès region, in the Prelitoral depression, and is crossed by the Foix river. It has 17.39 km ² of surface.

The municipality, located approximately 170 meters above sea level, maintains a balance between the plain and the mountains and is made up of a dozen urban centers and small neighborhoods, the most important being Los Monjes, La Ràpita and Cal Rubió, in addition of several farmhouses distributed throughout the municipal geography.

Our municipality has natural places of great beauty: the San Lorenzo Fountain, the Pinos Altos forest, the Cal Bruna Torrent, the Foix river... all of them deserve a special walk that arouses pleasant sensations.

Vestiges of various periods have been found: Iberian, Roman, Arab... witnesses to distant towns with a constant presence in the area, motivated by the proximity to the important Iberian nucleus of Olèrdola and the passage of the Via Augusta.

The passage of time has also left its mark through various elements that make up a history and a rich heritage, which the visitor can discover by walking. Among the most important are the Castle of Penyafort,   the Foix mill, the Penyafel hermitage, the numerous vestiges related to the Spanish civil war, with air raid shelters, the Ciarga, a former airfield, prison, aircraft assembly ships, etc.

All this framed in the Alt Penedès region, a wine region where the landscape and the weather accompany you to enjoy good stays.

Discover the Penyafort Castle

It takes place every Sunday at 10:30 am and 12pm. It is done for arranged groups and open groups.

With this visit we encourage you to discover the heritage building that best explains the historical evolution of the municipality of Santa Margarida i els Monjos, the castle of Penyafort. During the s. XI erected a watchtower to protect the castle of Olèrdola, designed to protect the land conquered from the Muslims of Al-Andalus. Since then, a church, a convent, a summer residence of the industrial bourgeoisie and even a prison depending on the republican aviation during the Civil War, have been added to the original fortification, giving rise to the current polyhedral and rich architectural complex. With this visit, we will embark on a long journey back in time, starting with the Catalan reconquest of Catalonia, to continue with the implantation of the Catholic counter-reform, confiscations and the industrial revolution, until the outbreak of the war in 1936 and the subsequent arrival of the first American tourists..
