Rupià

The Government of Catalonia granted the municipality of Rupià the declaration of Historic-Artistic Complex for a whole series of elements that make this town a truly obligatory visit.

For many centuries, Rupià was one of the domains of the Bishop of Girona. The presence of the miter and its officers has left its mark on the castle, in civil Gothic style, with a rectangular floor plan and built with ashlar masonry (14th-15th centuries), and also on the names of some of the streets and squares of the population.

Also visible are the remains of the 15th century walls that surround the core of the municipality, which maintains the medieval urban layout. The Amunt portal and the Avall portal still remind us today of the defense system that protected the town, since they were the only two access routes to the old town.

The visit to the municipality of Rupià can be completed with a brief tour of its surroundings, where the Mas Llorà stands out, located 1 km from the municipality, in the area of Brancós. It is a large house from the 18th century that preserves previous elements, from the 16th century. In a nearby field we find the Olivo Groso del Mas Llorà, an ancient tree of exceptional proportions that Josep Pla evoked as a "prodigious olive tree" in his texts. Today only the majestic vine remains, due to a fire in the summer of 1987. It is believed to be one of the largest olive trees in the Mediterranean. Around it there are remains of a population from Roman times.
