Lake Puigcerdà is one of the town's most emblematic and beloved spots, a place where history, nature, and leisure combine in a stunningly beautiful setting. Surrounded by trees and gardens, this medieval lake is one of Puigcerdà's main tourist attractions and an ideal place for strolling, relaxing, and enjoying the scenery.

The first documented reference to the lake dates from December 2, 1260, demonstrating its long-standing connection to the town's history. Fed by an irrigation channel, it played a vital role for centuries as a water reservoir for irrigation, cleaning the irrigation canals, and fighting fires.

The lake was also an important source of economic resources. Fishing was once practiced, and the mud was used as fertilizer and the sand for construction. One of the more unusual activities was the extraction of ice during the winter, which was cut into blocks and stored in a pit built in 1642.

At the end of the 19th century, with the arrival of the first summer visitors, Lake Puigcerdà was transformed into a recreational area. Among its historical anecdotes, the first ice hockey match in Puigcerdà, played on the lake's frozen surface in 1956, stands out.

Its current appearance is the result of a renovation begun in 1991, which replaced the old hexagonal perimeter with more sinuous shapes and updated the landscaping. Today, the lake is also a place to observe swans, ducks, and other waterfowl, as well as squirrels among the surrounding trees.

The lake is the centerpiece of the traditional Lake Festival, presided over by the popular Old Woman of the Lake, a centuries-old celebration linked to the island's former summer visitors. In addition, during July and August, you can take a boat trip, a special way to discover this corner of Puigcerdà from a different perspective.
