Penelles
Penelles is the southeast gate of the Noguera region, bordering the Urgell and the Pla d'Urgell, at the foot of the Bellmunt-Almenara mountain range. Today, Penelles can boast of being the town with the most murals per capita in Catalonia thanks to the Gargar Festival.
The festival of murals and rural art was born with the aim of providing the people with an injection of life and combating depopulation. The initiative, which wants to spread the artistic culture in the rural world, has made Penelles a benchmark. With a hundred murals distributed throughout the town, local and international artists are valued, promoted and given visibility .
The town also stands out for other elements. To the north, there is Rocafinestres, 30 minutes walking, with a privileged view of the Montsec and the Pre-Pyrenees on one side and the flat of Lleida on the other. At the southern end, the historic estate of Castell del Remei (where along with the restaurant and the shrine to the Virgin of Remedy, is the well-known wine cellar that can boast, among many others, the title of being the first bottled wine of Catalonia), the Santa Ana home and the Almassor nucleus (with its small cinema museum and the rural house of the Masuca de Monfà), along with large farmhouses such as Torreneral, La Toralla, Cal Folch and the San Vicente Ferrer Farm. You will also find a beautiful walk of one hour walking from the town along the historic sidewalks of the Urgell Canal and the groves that cover the Plana road.
Within the core of Penelles, you can find the centenary fountain, the Plaza Mayor, the laundry room, the Gothic cross of the term, the two churches (the remains of the Romanesque and the modernist of San Juan Bautista, built by Danish and Puig Boada, disciples of Gaudí). And also taste, in addition to the wine from Castell del Remei, bread and "cokes" from Forn Artesà, sausages made in ca Enriqueta or enjoy the cuisine of the restaurant El Taller, El Xaragall and Las Piscinas. In the Gargar Space, right next to the Antingua church, there is the information point where you can also visit the Estampart stamping and woodwork workshop .
The celebrations that are celebrated are: Gargar Festival and Fair of the rural World, celebrated the first weekend of the month of May; the biggest summer party, held on the last weekend of August; and the party of Castell del Remei, the second Sunday of October.
