HISTORY

Lliçà d'Amunt was documented in 987, but the reference to the neighboring town of Lliçano Subteriore or Vall (d'Avall) in 946 already presupposes the existence of a Lliçà d'Amunt on that date. But the place was inhabited long before, as indicated by the remains of Roman villas in Ca l'Amell Gros and Santa Justa and in the Sant Valerià dependency. A Roman ceramic oven has also been located in Ca l'Amell Gros and signs of remote housing in other places in the area.

A dispersed municipality

It is one of the most dispersed municipalities in the Vallès Oriental, but the ancestral houses that dot the entire territory and the five churches that are preserved make up an architectural heritage that is not inconsiderable.

Lliçà d'Amunt is an extensive town, about 22 square kilometers, made up of an urban center and 17 neighborhoods scattered throughout the territory, with a typology of single-family houses.

The architectural heritage

In the municipality of Lliçà d'Amunt, in addition to several manor houses , five churches are preserved.

In the urban center is the parish of Sant Julià de Lliçà d'Amunt, already mentioned in the year 1014, and around it is the small, tightly packed Sagrera. In the Middle Ages, the space of thirty paces around the church became a sacred and protected place - the Sagrera - where no robbery or crime could be committed and where peasants could live in peace.

On top of the hill that closes the urban center to the west, is the small chapel of Sant Baldiri, from 1727. And further to the west, the chapel of Sant Valerià, mentioned already in the year 1094. Both are located at the foot of two of the great roads that came down fromSant Feliu de Codines in Parets del Vallès above the ridges.

Between the valleys of Caldes and Tenes, in the natural oasis that is the small agricultural valley of Palaudàries, protected by the forest to the north and besieged by the large urbanizations that surround it, is the monumental complex of Sant Esteve de Palaudàries, church already mentioned in 904 as Palatio Arias. It has a large bell tower and the only communion tower (place from where the priest blessed the crops and warded off storms) in the Tenes valley.

Finally, to the northeast of the term, at the foot of the old Roman road that went from Aquae Calidae ( Caldes de Montbui ) to Granularius ( Granollers ), is the typically Romanesque chapel of Santa Justa and Santa Rufina, already mentioned in 1072, with a large belfry bell tower that seems disproportionate. The hermitage is located in the middle of a grove of oaks and surrounded by fields, and is one of the most magical and emblematic places in the area.
