La Morera de Montsant

La Morera de Montsant is a municipality that is located in the northern half of the region of Priorat. Its name comes from the amount of mulberry bushes (bush) found in his term and Montsant mountain overlooking the town.

His term is predominantly hilly and winding, as it includes the Sierra del Montsant, together with all that is around it, like the Sierra Mayor.

This situation is privileged also to welcome visitors determined to know the High Sierra de Montsant through field trips, since it has different accesses, called Graus, as Grau dels Barrots, the grau grau of Carabassal or of l'Espinós. Moreover, in La Morera de Montsant is the headquarters of the Natural Park of the Sierra de Montsant.

The township has a major population center consists of La Morera de Montsant, but also includes a small town in Scala, where it stood originally selling the Cartuja the same name and where we also find the wineries of Scala Dei. A one kilometer, there are the remains of the monastery of Santa Maria de Escaladei (XII-XIX century) and that shape today, the main monument of the Priorat region. In fact, the monastery of Scala was the first to be built in the Iberian Peninsula with the arrival of the monks of the Carthusian Order from Provence. His influence was so important that even the Prior was who named the Priorat region, already noted for its wine products and included much like that today is the DO Priorat.
