La Jonquera

La Jonquera, a municipality with an area of 56.90 km2, at an altitude of 112 m and a population of around 3,000 inhabitants, is located on the westernmost slopes of the Albera mountain range, which delimits the counties of Alt Empordà and Vallespir (Cat. Nord) Spanish-French border since the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659).

The extensive territory of the municipality forms two well-differentiated sectors, both dominated by the Sierra de la Albera, part of which is protected as a Natural Area of National Interest. To the west, the sector that belongs to the Llobregat de Empordà basin and includes the town of La Jonquera, the Limits neighborhood, the Canadal and Torts aggregates, the Rocabertí castle and the churches of Santa Llúcia, Sant Martí de la glass fountain, Santa María de Panissars and San Pedro del Pla de L'Arca. To the east, the sector that belongs to the Anyet basin that includes the old term that ruled the castle of Requesens.
