La Granadella

The origin of the Granadella is lost in the annals of the times, the town was already among the 32 towns of Catalonia that in the time of the Romans had the honorary title of municipium. It is located south of the Les Garrigues region, playing with the Segrià and the Ribera de Ebro, in the highest part (628m) of the garriguenca platform, Les Garrigues Altes.

The configuration of the villa is typical of the villages of Les Garrigues, that is, a growth that evolves from the castle and the church towards the plain, between the two crests of the sierra, where the old raft used to be for watering the animals. In the place where an ancient crucifix was venerated since the 14th century, in 1764 the current church of Santa María de Gracia was begun , in the Baroque style and called by its dimensions the cathedral of Les Garrigues. The belfry, octagonal tower, is one of the most beautiful and majestic of the western lands.

The remains of the old castle are part of the old town, where remains of the walls and silos are still preserved. In the closed village we find the convent, a primitive church of transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Also porticoed houses with Baroque and Renaissance decoration.

The streets of La Granadella are uneven and capricious, with no cobblestones. Almost all go to the church square where there is a public fountain that does not flow and a few benches where its the people to listen to the radio of the Esport bar.

Of the 1920, and in perfect state of conservation, emphasizes the Agricultural Cooperative and of 1921 the Sancho flour mill.
