La Figuera

Municipality of Priorat, rugged by western buttresses of the Montsant, located right on the river of the same name. The town of Figuera, 575 meters, is located in an elevated position from where you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama. It is known as the sentinel of Priorat.

Another point of interest within the term is the place known as Colls Solans, not far from the village, where a unique perspective of all the region is descried. It is known as the "balcony of the Priorat".

The population is agricultural. The main crops grown are wine and oil. The Cooperative was founded as Agricultural Union, 1932.

Due to climatic conditions, plantations strains are almost over the entire term of the Garnacha, which gives exquisite wines, soft quality and flavor. The wines are designation of origin Tarragona, Falset subzone. Bottling is marketed under the name Aubacs and Solans.

The oil is Siurana designation of origin.

Due to its privileged location and climate, the Figuera, it has become an ideal place for holiday and second residence. This makes the summers and weekends the people regain movement and vitality that was lost years ago.

Rather than talking about notable buildings, when it comes to the Figuera it includes its environment, natural viewpoints that allow admire magnificent landscapes and corners and places that make this small town a place worth visiting.

As Joan Asens says in Priorat Guide: "If connoisseurs of Catalonia have said the Priorat is one of the most beautiful regions of the Principality, it is not unreasonable to ensure that Figuera can see one of the most beautiful panoramas of our Earth ".

History

Legend has it that in the place where the village is now a huge fig tree, so great was the Romans harbored herds. Then, in the same place, a castle that kept this fig tree in his yard was built. Currently, across the street from the wall you can see obvious remains of fortified walls. From that disappeared castle and the great fig tree, it seems that the village has retained the name.

The first historical data about the Higuera found in the donation that makes Albert de Castellvell in the church of Tortosa. This donation is called as Gibolhoder mountain.

Gibolhoder or Figuera, was not settled until a few years after its integration into the lands of Tortosa. Its population letter dated December 5, 1182, three years before the Cabacés. It is therefore one of the letters oldest population of New Catalonia.

At that time, he was given a broad term that bordered the river Montsant Mas d'en Bas, ancient village of Molar, and Asco and Cabacés.

Shortly thereafter, the Figuera joined the Barony of Cabacés, as can be seen in the "Book of Ordinances of the Villa della Figuera" Book of uses and customs that govern the coexistence of people. It started 1310, finished in 1734.

La Ermita de San Pablo

One of the places where you can best enjoy the vastness of the landscape is the chapel of San Pablo, located in the northwest of the population, about two and a half kilometers. In the chapel Virgen de la Mola, of great devotion, is revered among neighboring peoples.

About 500 meters from the shrine to the west, towards the tip of the mountain, you can visit that was put in command of the Republican army during the Battle of the Ebro. From this privileged location you can see up to 40 kilometers of river Ebro.
