Granyena de Segarra

The municipality of Granyena de Segarra, 16.30 km2, extends through the SW sector of the region, in the valley below the torrent of Vilagrasseta, in the area of slopes between the Ondara river and the Corb river, to the south of cervera.

The town of Granyena de Segarra stands on a hill crowned by its old castle. The portals and other medieval corners mark the limit of the old enclosure of the town, dominated by the staircase and the parish church. Since the end of the Middle Ages, construction began outside the walls, and in the 18th century the square and calle de Sant Pere were built on the old cemetery.

The parish church of Santa Maria is a large neoclassical building, one of the largest and most interesting in Segarra, built at the end of the 18th century with three naves and a majestic bell tower that marks the silhouette of the town.

From the castle of Granyena, at the top of the town, made mostly by the Templars, there remain some large walls several meters high that give the measure of the great construction. It was the second fortification of the place, since half a kilometer to the south of the town are the ruins of a cylindrical tower that served as a guard or defense in the 11th century and part of the 12th. In the cemetery near the castle, a square has now been developed, there is a chapel that perhaps corresponds to the one from the time of the Templars.
