Gavà

Province: Barcelona | Shire: Baix Llobregat | Inhabitants: 46.383 | Extension: 30,8 Km2 | Altitude: 9 m

The city of Gavà is located at a strategic point, cartographically speaking. In broad strokes we could place it in the south of the Baix Llobregat region. It is located just 20 minutes from the city center of Barcelona and 10 minutes from El Prat de Llobregat airport.

Its geographical position allows it to have a contrast of landscapes; Its territory is divided between the mountain and the coast. A large part of these mountains are included in the Garraf Natural Park.

In the municipality there is a park with an extension of 10 hectares that allows the realization of multiple activities. This is the Millennium Park where, in addition, we find a sculpture in human form that receives this name and that was a gift from the theater group of the Fura dels Baus.

Also, the territory has 4 kilometers of coastline. This area is known, formally, as Gavà mar. In this town, different patrimonial elements are preserved that take us to an era in the history of Gavà. Towards the seventies in the northern part of the municipality were discovered some prehistoric mines. With this finding, the creation of a museum known as the Minas de Gavà Archaeological Park was promoted .

Two years after the opening of the mines to the public, in 1996, they obtained the cataloging of a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia.

On the way to Begues, a neighboring town, we can stop near Bruguers where the remains of the Eramprunyà Castle dating from the 10th century are kept. This was built as a defense system for the territory of the Carolingians with regard to Al-Andalus. This contains the remains of the hermitage of San Miguel de Eramprunyà, which stands out for having a Romanesque and a Renaissance part.

The American Lake building retains some medieval-inspired eclectic style identifications of the buildings that were built at the beginning of the 20th century. Regarding the industrial heritage, there is a brick chimney seen from the old brickworks that existed. However, if what we want is to receive a global vision of the city, the Museum of Gavà gives shape to a joint image of it. In addition, the building itself is interesting to visit as it is located in a stately residential building of 1779 known as the Torre Lluch.

As for gastronomy and traditions, each year a fair is celebrated commemorating the era of splendor of asparagus production , which receives thousands of visitors and is an opportunity for promotion.
