Espolla
It is a municipality located in the Alt Empordà region, in the province of Girona, Catalonia. This picturesque town extends from the southern slope of the Albera mountain range, between the Monte de los Pastores (1,173 m) and the peak of Sallafort (989 m), to the slope at the beginning of the Empordà plain. It includes a large part of the upper Orlina valley and, in the southern part, the headwaters of the Merdanç river, offering a privileged natural environment that combines history, culture and landscapes of great beauty.
History and Heritage
The name Espolla comes from its location in a forest of oaks, holm oaks and strawberry trees, known locally as lipoteros. The municipality has a rich history dating back to the megalithic era, as evidenced by the various prehistoric monuments that can be found in the surrounding area.
