Els Hostalets de Pierola
Landscape and environment, culture and heritage, own products and organic gardens, citizenship and well-being. Some values that Els Hostalets de Pierola lives every day and offers to those who walk through its streets and enjoy its surroundings.
The territory enjoys a set of cultural and natural resources that make up a great cultural landscape formed over the centuries and always with the attentive gaze of the Montserrat mountain in the background.
The name of Pierola appears documented for the first time in the year 963 with the Latin expression Apierola. At the beginning of the 17th century, the name Hostalets began to be found in the municipality of Pierola, as several establishments dedicated to the service of travelers opened.
The growth of the Hostalets of Pierola made its inhabitants ask for and achieve, in 1852, having their own church, which led to the transfer of the rector from the Pierola rectory to Hostalets. The parish definitely moved to Hostalets in 1868.
One of the most difficult times for the population was at the end of the 19th century when phylloxera destroyed almost the entire vineyard.
Los Hostalets de Pierola is proud of its ancient history. A passage of time that has left its mark on urban planning, traditions and the way of being of hostaletencs: open and welcoming.
A few kilometers from the town we find the Romanesque church of San Pedro de Pierola, in the original nucleus of the municipality. This building, with almost a thousand years of history, has a high historical value for the town, which has proudly begun restoration work on this precious monument.
In the district of Pierola there is also the Torre de Pierola, the most important medieval of the Hostalets of Pierola with almost 800 years of history.
Modernist architecture took root in an important way in Hostalets de Pierola. Thus, in the urban fabric of the town you can enjoy large examples of this architectural style so closely linked to the Renaixença and the Catalan spirit that is experienced in the town.
The most interesting way to get to know the natural environment and landscape of Hostalets de Pierola is by practicing sports and especially those that take place outdoors. There are possibilities for everyone, of all conditions and ages.
There is an element that makes Els Hostalets de Pierola unique in the world. This is the figure of the PAU (Pieralopithecus Catalanicus), the oldest hominid in Europe at 12 million years old.
