Corbins
Corbins is a town in the province of Lleida of about 1400 inhabitants. Located to the northwest of the region of Segrià, it borders the district of La Noguera and is located on an alluvial plain at 211 m. Tall. Within its term, the river Noguera Ribagorçana empties into the Segre in the area of the Confluence.
How to get
It is connected by the C-12 road and is 10km from Lleida 17km from Balaguer and 4km from the link with the A-2 highway (Lleida-Barcelona) and has 3 access points to the town.
The weather
It is typical of the Plain of Lleida, cold and cloudy winters and dry and warm summers.
Name's origin
It is of Latin origin and has been interpreted as a derivative hydronite curvum, explicable by the meanders and undulations of the course of the river.
History
The first document, where there is evidence of the existence of Corbins, is what Cayo Julio César (100-44 BC) wrote in his book Bello Vívili, where he narrates maneuvers of the battle of Ilerda (Lleida) in which he confronted the troops of Pompey, those that took place in the area of Corbins.
We also know that at that time Ilerda had six access gates, of which, specifically, this one was called Portal de Corbins and it was located at the junction of Carrer del Carmen and Plaza de la Sal. This name lasted until the fourteenth century when it was changed to Puerta Ferrissa.
The importance of Corbins at that time is supported by the Geographic Atlas of Catalonia, where it is clear that one of the main roads connected to the Via Augusta, which passed through Lleida, reached Corbins and from there branched off with three secondary roads that they arrived, one in Iesso (Guissona) another in AESS (Isona) and the third entered Iulia líbico (Llívia-Francia). We have the physical evidence in the archaeological remains found: the vil.la Roman, the funeral monument and the oil press.
From the 8th century, the Iberian Peninsula was conquered by the Saracens, who settled in our area, took advantage of the old Roman roads, and Corbins continued to be a strategic point, where also, according to the Geographical Atlas of Catalonia, our town is defined as medina (city) and hisn (strength).
This fortress would be the Castle of Corbins that was located on a hill at a point of excellent strategic value, at the crossroads between two rivers. The first documented document dates from the 10th century, when Al Razi, a geographer of that time, cites it as one of the most important in the territory of Lleida.
This castle, for the fact of being between the Muslim Balaguer and the Christian Lleida, for more than four decades, was changing hands, which left him very damaged.
The Fossar Vell
The Fossar Vell, next to the church, is one of the most beautiful squares of the town, especially because of its location, since it is a viewpoint from which you can see the entire River Park.
As the name suggests is the old cemetery in the past always stood next to the church.
For many years it was a vacant corner where nothing was done. But because of some works that were carried out to communicate two streets, part of this land was opened and then there were a lot of skeletal remains corresponding to the burials many years ago. At that moment they withdrew and were saved.
Years later the space is urbanized making the current square, which has a circular shape and in the center of it was placed a small niche, where the bones that had been found years ago were placed, and with this gesture the last funeral was made in the Old Cemetery.
The square is well equipped with benches, planters, a fountain and a security railing. The view from this viewpoint is splendid. On the side that touches the church there is a monolith with majolica tiles where is written the poem that J. Hueso dedicated to Corbins on the occasion of the party of the Proclamation of Pubilla de Catalunya, in 1993.
