Capçanes
Capçanes has been a land of Iberians, Romans, Moors and Christians vestiges that still remain. Now if anything stands Capçanes is for being the hometown of one of the most important antiborbónicos guerrillas and, simultaneously, less recognized in our country. Pere Joan Barceló i Anguera, better known by the name of Carrasclet, born in Capçanes 1682 until his death in 1743, many years after the Spanish occupation of 1714, continued fighting for the recovery of the national liberties of Catalonia and could command more than 8,000 men. From humble origins, was Carrasclet mountain rifleman during the war of succession and reached the rank of captain. Amnestied after the fall of Barcelona on 11 September 1714, he was arrested again a month later. After fleeing from prison, he organized guerrilla resistant southern Catalonia.
In 1719, in the context of the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1718-1720, faced the powers of The Hague, with the support of France, against Philip V, due to the aggressive policy of this Italy) led the uprising the southern counties of the Principality. Exiled in France in 1720 fled to Vienna, where he was awarded the rank of colonel and land in Hungary. It mobilized again by Emperor Charles VI in 1734, and defended Naples was arrested by the Bourbon and imprisoned in Cádiz. Released in 1740, led a company of exiles in 1743 and died in combat in Breisach.
A clear tribute to Carrasclet and struggle can be seen as right at the entrance of the town statue.
One of the elements that characterize our people are certainly original wine and vineyards. The pebbles, the old vines, the land plowed slate, granite and calcareous sand and clay soils enable one of the highest rated wines from around the world.
To enjoy this landscape just have to try wine Capçanes, protected under the Montsant, and in which one can recognize impregnated, the variety of colors in the form of flavors that come together on this working land for centuries, for generations farmers of our people.
In 1933 Celler de Capçanes was created and since then, through the efforts of successive generations, has adapted to the changes in order to work successfully with the needs of the moment. Sample the desire is currently processing is done in the Kosher Wine Cellar, special treatment for the Jewish community, and also high quality wines as Cabrida, Mas Collet or Lasendal.
Capçanes is one of the gateways to the Sierra de Llaberia Interests Protected Natural Area. The town is a member also of the Consortium Sierra Llaberia where working for the conservation, study and protection of these mountains .
This landscape welcomes steep cliffs, wild ravines, ancient yew trees and eagles playing with garbinada. Terraces of old vineyards, olive and almond trees give a texture and smell of a unique and overwhelming landscape.
Margins and sheds dry stone coal lost in the middle of the woods, farms and mills full of history, ditches, wells and water sources that make a precious commodity showing obvious signs of the man who has shaped this landscape, which is apparent when we entered one of its corners.
