The Castanyedes of Requesens (Cantallops)
In the heart of the Albera mountain range, in the Alt Empordà region, the forests of Requesens conceal some of the most captivating woodland landscapes in northern Catalonia. This natural environment, usually accessed from Cantallops, is an ideal destination to enjoy autumn among chestnut, oak, holm oak, and beech trees.
One of the most interesting areas for discovering chestnut trees is the path that connects the village of Requesens with the Verneda spring and the Forcat pass. Along this route, hikers cross chestnut groves that, during October and November, offer a landscape of golden leaves, ochre hues, and a particularly tranquil atmosphere.
The forests of Requesens are a good alternative for discovering chestnut trees in the Girona region, far from the more well-known and frequented chestnut festivals of Catalonia.
The visit also allows you to discover other attractions in the area, such as the Requesens castle, an impressive fortress surrounded by mountains, and the paths that lead into the Albera Natural Area of National Interest.
For hiking enthusiasts, this is an opportunity to combine an autumn excursion with the discovery of the natural and historical heritage of Alt Empordà.
It's important to remember that much of the area is part of private property and a protected natural space. Therefore, before collecting chestnuts, it's essential to obtain the necessary permits, stay on designated paths, and always respect the forest.
