Canet de Mar
Modernism by the sea. Canet de Mar is a hidden gem in the Maresme region. This charming coastal town perfectly combines golden sandy beaches, a rich modernist heritage, and a unique cultural offering, making it an ideal destination for an unforgettable getaway.
A walk through modernism
Canet de Mar is known for its modernist legacy, thanks to the influence of architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, who left an indelible mark on the town.
One of the must-see places is the Lluís Domènech i Montaner House Museum, which includes the Domènech house and the Masia Rocosa, a 17th-century farmhouse that the architect converted into his studio. The space offers an in-depth look into the life and work of Domènech i Montaner, with plans, sketches, and photographs of his most iconic projects.
Casa Roura, also known as Ca la Bianga, is another notable work by Domènech i Montaner. Built between 1891 and 1892, the residence is an excellent example of the use of exposed brick and ceramics in modernist architecture. The building currently houses a restaurant, allowing visitors to enjoy local cuisine in a historic setting.
Historical and cultural heritage
The Castle of Santa Florentina is another gem of Canet de Mar. Originally a Roman villa, it was transformed into a medieval fortress and later restored by Domènech i Montaner in 1910. This neo-Gothic castle houses an interesting collection of works by Catalan artists from the early 20th century and has been the setting for film productions, such as the series "Game of Thrones".
The Parish Church of Sant Pere and Sant Pau, built between the 16th and 17th centuries, is a notable example of Gothic architecture. With a single nave and side chapels, it stands out for its three-story square bell tower, erected between 1793 and 1805. Despite the damage suffered during the Civil War, the church was restored and remains a focal point of the municipality's religious and cultural life.
Beaches and nature
Canet de Mar has over 2 km of coastline, with golden sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. The 1,500-meter-long Playa de Canet is ideal for families and offers several amenities, such as beach bars and play areas. The quieter 600-meter Playa del Cavaió is perfect for those looking to relax in a more serene setting. Both beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag for their quality and amenities.
For nature lovers, the Montnegre-Corredor Natural Park offers hiking trails that allow you to discover the local flora and fauna, as well as enjoy stunning panoramic views. One of the most popular hikes is the one that leads to the Pedracastell Cross, from where you can enjoy spectacular views of the town and the coast.
Whether strolling through its streets filled with modernist architecture, relaxing on its beaches or enjoying its culinary offerings, Canet de Mar offers a unique experience for all visitors.
