Alfara de Carles

Province: Tarragona | Shire: Baix Ebre | Inhabitants: 398 | Extension: 63,9 Km2 | Altitude: 334 m

Alfara de Carles is a municipality in Baix Ebre (north of Tortosa, southern Catalonia), located in the rugged Els Ports de Beceite massif. It is bordered to the west by the Sierra de la Espina and the Coscollosa hill, and to the south by Caro, which, at 1,442 metres, is the main elevation of Els Ports.

It seems that the name of the municipality derives from a town that existed before the Reconquest, then called Castles. Although its origin is not known with certainty, it was inhabited during the Andalusian period, which is where the other part of the name Alfara comes from, which means weaving.
