Agramunt
The municipality of Agramunt is located in the Urgell region, situated at the foot of the Sió River. The municipality is made up of the aggregates of Almenara Alta, Donzell d'Urgell, Mafet, Montclar d'Urgell and Les Puelles.
The history of the town of Agramunt dates back to 1070 when it was fortified to face the invasion of the Arabs. The result of this long history is a large number of buildings of great interest. To see part of this history it is advisable to get lost in its steep streets.
In the centre of the town we find the Agramunt Town Hall, a baroque building from the 18th century situated in a porticoed square. Another very interesting square is the Plaza del Mercadal, a square from the 19th century, one of the first squares in Catalonia to be built following urban planning criteria. It is interesting to walk along Calle de Sió where there are large porches on the right-hand side and a façade with small ceramic tiles, very interesting from 1933.
Also worth mentioning is the Church of Santa María de Agramunt, from the 12th and 13th centuries and in Romanesque style with a three-nave plan ending with three apses, and with Toulouse and Mudejar influences and some ornaments of Anglo-Norman origin. In 1931 it was declared a National Monument.
On the outskirts of the town, but clearly visible, is the Montclar Castle, a fortification from the Reconquest (11th century) rebuilt in the 17th century, declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1979. Also on the outskirts we find the Pilar de Almenara, a round watchtower from the 11th century.
For those who want to delve deeper into art and culture, there is also the Espai Guinovart, where the work of the painter and sculptor Josep Guinovart is displayed; the Municipal Ethnological Museum or the Casa de Poesía Visual Lo Pardal.
