Conca de Barberà
La Conca de Barberà is a region located in the interior of Catalonia, known for its rich history, its medieval heritage and its landscapes of vineyards and cereals. With a past deeply linked to the Cistercian order and a deep-rooted winemaking tradition, La Conca offers a unique combination of culture, nature and gastronomy.
One of the region's great attractions is the Poblet Monastery, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This Cistercian monastery, founded in the 12th century, is one of the most important monasteries in Europe and one of the best examples of medieval monastic architecture. Poblet is also the burial place of several kings of the Crown of Aragon, making it a place of special historical significance. The monastery, surrounded by forests, is a must-see for lovers of history and culture.
The capital of the region, Montblanc, is another of its great treasures. This medieval town, one of the best preserved in Catalonia, is surrounded by an impressive wall dating back to the 14th century. Walking through its cobbled streets is like taking a trip back in time, with the Plaza Mayor, the church of Santa Maria and the Jewish Quarter as some of its most emblematic spots. Montblanc is also known for the Legend of Sant Jordi, which according to Catalan tradition, took place in this town.
The landscape of the Conca de Barberà is dominated by vineyards, cereal fields and small mountain ranges. The region is part of the DO Conca de Barberà, known for its wines, especially those made from the native variety Borrado, which produces light and aromatic rosé and red wines. Many of the wineries in the region offer tours and tastings to discover the winemaking tradition of the area.
The villages of La Conca, such as L'Espluga de Francolí, with its interesting Museum of Rural Life and prehistoric Caves, or Santa Coloma de Queralt, with its medieval charm, offer a quiet and authentic experience, far from the large tourist crowds.
The gastronomy of Conca de Barberà is a reflection of its agricultural tradition, with dishes that incorporate local products such as artisanal sausages, mushrooms and cheeses. In addition, the wines of the DO Conca de Barberà are the perfect complement to enjoying a good meal in one of its family restaurants.
Come and discover the medieval heritage, enjoy nature and be captivated by the history and flavour of Conca de Barberà, a region full of charm and tradition.
