Spain vs. Portugal: Which Destination Wins for Your Next Holiday Adventure?

Spain vs. Portugal: Which Destination Wins for Your Next Holiday Adventure?

Spain and Portugal are two of the most popular holiday destinations. Though they are next to one another, you could be mistaken for thinking they're very similar. Sure, they have sun and good food, but they're distinctly different.

There is of course the possibility of combining them, either through a walking holiday on a Camino de Santiago trail from Baiona or two, or simply flying between them which can take around an hour. With that said, here's a rundown of their differences.

Climate

Spain's climate varies greatly, from the cool and rainy Basque region in the north to the hot, dry south. The best time to visit depends on weather preferences and region, but the flexibility is there. Generally, winter in the south is mild, and summer in the north is mild-to-hot. But if you're looking for a suntan, there are opportunities for at least 6 months of the year.

Portugal enjoys a milder climate compared to Spain, making it more similar to Spain's north. The Algarve region is particularly known for its sunny weather, though, where the temperature can be more comfortable than Spain's south (but also sunny).

Food

Spain is known for its diverse cuisine, from tapas to paellas, with each region boasting its own specialities. Dining out is a social experience, and dinner runs late into the night. Expect to find a wide range of prices, from budget-friendly tapas bars to high-end restaurants. Again, like the weather, there are a lot of options.

Portugal's gastronomy is heavily influenced by its maritime history, meaning seafood takes centre stage. Bacalhau (salted cod) is a national dish, though it can be prepared in numerous ways. Portuguese cuisine is generally less diverse but is more affordable compared to Spain. That isn't to say it's less tasty, as many believe it's some of the best in the world.

Cultural and Historical Experiences

Spain's rich history can be seen through its architecture, from the Moorish palaces of Andalusia to the medieval castles of Castile. The country is also known for its vibrant festivals, such as the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona and the infamous tomato-throwing festival in Buñol. But, it also has a dark past, with civil wars and many political tensions.

Portugal's cultural heritage is also impressive, with UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Belém Tower in Lisbon and the University of Coimbra. The country's history, like its food, is maritime-based, with it holding the record for the world's longest surviving ally (with Britain and their maritime history). Portugal also has great architecture and festivals, and arguably with the benefit of being less spread out geographically.

Outdoor Activities

Spain offers a wide range of outdoor activities. It has beach holidays on the Costa del Sol and hiking in the Pyrenees. The country is also known for its golf courses, wellness retreats, and ski resorts. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding along the coast.

Portugal is a paradise for surfers, with Nazaré famous for its giant waves. It may not have the Pyrenees mountains but it boasts beautiful national parks, like the Peneda-Gerês National Park, perfect for hiking and nature lovers. Portugal's extensive coastline provides ample opportunities for water sports and beach activities.

Conclusion

Spain and Portugal aren't all that similar, despite being close neighbours. Spain perhaps offers a greater variety of experiences, but that doesn't mean the quality is higher — they both boast some of the best food in the world. When it comes to bang for your buck, it's difficult to beat Portugal.
