  3. Flights from Madrid to Istanbul:…

If you're planning your next trip from the Spanish capital, here's a practical guide with everything you need to know about Madrid-Istanbul flights to help you organize your getaway perfectly.

How long is the flight between Madrid and Istanbul?

The straight-line distance between the two cities is approximately 2,700 kilometers. Fortunately, there are excellent direct connections that make the journey quick and comfortable.

A direct flight from Madrid to Istanbul takes approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes. The return journey is usually slightly longer (around 4 hours and 45 minutes) due to air currents at higher altitudes, which is perfectly normal in aviation. In any case, it's a very reasonable time that allows you to leave Spain in the morning and be enjoying Turkish tea overlooking the Bosphorus that same afternoon.

The airports of origin and destination

Your journey will begin at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD), Spain's main hub, perfectly connected to the city center by metro, commuter train, express bus and taxi.

Upon landing in Turkey, you should be aware that Istanbul has two main airports. Depending on the airline you fly with, you will arrive at one or the other:

1. Istanbul Airport (IST)

It is the city's new main airport, recently opened and located on the European side. It is one of the largest and most modern airports in the world, with spectacular facilities, a vast array of shops and services, and state-of-the-art technology.

2. Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW)

Located on the Asian side of the city, this airport is smaller than the main one, but handles a high volume of passengers, being the main base for most low-cost carriers.

Airlines that operate the route

As a key connection between Spain and the bridge to Asia, you have different flight options:

  • Turkish Airlines: Turkey's flag carrier and network airline. It offers several daily direct flights from Madrid-Barajas to the new Istanbul Airport (IST). It is known for its premium service, which includes hot meals on board, individual entertainment, and a generous checked baggage allowance in most fares.

  • Pegasus Airlines: This is Turkey's main low-cost carrier. It operates direct flights from Madrid, but in this case, they land at Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW). It's a popular option for those prioritizing savings on the basic fare.

How to get from the airports to the center of Istanbul

Once you land, getting to the city center (areas like Sultanahmet or Taksim Square) is easy thanks to the various transport options available at both airports.

From Istanbul Airport (IST):

  • Subway: The M11 line connects the airport to the city's subway network, allowing you to get there quickly while avoiding traffic.

  • Havaist buses: These are comfortable buses designed specifically for airport transfers. They offer direct routes to popular tourist destinations (such as Taksim and Aksaray) at very affordable prices.

  • Taxi or Private Transfer: The road journey usually takes between 40 and 60 minutes, depending entirely on Istanbul's famous traffic.

From Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW):

  • Subway: The M4 line connects this airport to the Kadıköy district on the Asian side. From there, you can take a traditional ferry across to the European side—a lovely way to start your trip.

  • Havabüs buses: Similar to the service at the other airport, these buses take you directly to Taksim Square or Kadıköy in comfort.

  • Taxi: Being on the Asian side, a taxi to the European historic area can be more expensive and take more than an hour if you travel during rush hour.

With all this information in hand, all you have to do is choose the dates that best suit your schedule, pack your suitcase and get ready to discover one of the most fascinating cities on the planet.
