Museums and culture accessible to all

Accessibility to art and culture requires a commitment on the part of the museums and cultural centers of Catalonia in order to reduce physical, communication and cognitive barriers, as well as economic ones. The objective is to promote universal accessibility and the diversity of audiences in our society.

In this line, every day there are more Catalan museums that promote actions to work with accessibility for all people with the conviction that art facilitates integration and social transformation.

An example is the continued improvement of the facilities and the construction of ramps and elevators skills. But it is not just about physical barriers.

Culture includes all the senses. Making it accessible does not only mean removing the access barriers to the buildings where it is exhibited. It means also taking into account other difficulties, other deficits, other barriers.

The idea is that these centers provide all visitors with the possibility of participating in the artistic experience, to try to bring our heritage closer to everyone, without exclusion. Examples are the experimental activities that allow the blind to perceive sculptural art through touch and the sighted to understand what perception one can have of the sculptures without seeing.

These centers also have sensory resources for people with hearing disabilities and the deaf, such as transcriptions of the audio guides in dossiers with written information, wheelchair service and elevators to facilitate the tour of the exhibitions.

Access to culture is a fundamental right of people that must be enjoyed with all five senses and in an inclusive way.

May 18, International Museum Day in Catalonia 2025

On May 18, 2025, International Museum Day is celebrated, a European initiative welcomed in many countries, and also in Catalonia. On this day, and the weekends before and after, hundreds of museums in Catalonia open their doors to show us their temporary or permanent exhibitions, in addition to organizing different activities, such as family workshops or guided tours. Some museums have also signed up to celebrate the Night of the Museums, a different way of being able to visit the museums until late at night.

Do not miss the opportunity to relive the history that is hidden under our feet.
