Enjoy the world of giants
A giant is a traditional and popular festive element of great proportions that usually represents a person and is designed to participate in celebrations and citizen festivals, especially the Festival.
The origin of the giants must go looking for the Corpus Christi processions in the 15th century, a folk wealth that has endured and evolved over more than thirty generations.
Supported by an internal structure, the giant is carried by one or more people, wears a suit suitable for the person who represents and dances to the rhythm of music. Although up to twenty years ago they did not drop 70-80 kilos, nowadays giants usually weigh between 30 and 50 kilos, and they are mostly made of stone cardboard and fiberglass. Among the different typological classifications, we can group them according to what they represent (kings, nobles, peasants, well-known characters, fantastic...), their size (giants, gigantones, gegantets) and their structure (trestle, backpack or stick).
In Catalonia, there are a dozen artisans who are dedicated to making giants and other festive elements and a total of 328 groups of giants who call more than 1,000 events throughout the year.
