The Feast of Corpus Christi has been one of the most important in Europe for seven centuries. The feast was instituted by the Church around 1246 and, beyond being a religious festival, the celebration of Corpus Christi was, from its very medieval origins and still is in many places, a civic celebration.
When are the Corpus Christi festivities celebrated in Catalonia in 2027?
Corpus Christi in 2027 will be celebrated on Thursday, May 27th. The date of this feast changes each year, as it always takes place 60 days after Easter Sunday. The Corpus Christi festivities last for four days, from Thursday to Corpus Christi Sunday, which in 2027 falls on May 30th.
Corpus Christi marks the height of spring and unleashes the full festive spirit of Catalonia. In an explosion of flowers, carpets and floral displays fill the streets for the processions and all kinds of traditional celebrations. Towns and cities like Sallent, Arbúcies, and La Garriga are transformed with the adornment of their streets, squares, and facades. A truly unique visual spectacle!
The Corpus Christi celebration in Barcelona lasts four days, from Thursday to Sunday. The main event is the procession, which has been held on Sunday since 1990. One of the highlights of the festival is l'ou com balla ( the dancing egg), a Barcelona tradition that distinguishes the city during the Corpus Christi festivities.
During Corpus Christi in Berga, the Patum festival is celebrated, a tradition dating back to at least 1454. UNESCO has declared it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Its current structure has been documented since 1725 and has remained largely unchanged to this day. The present-day characteristics, spaces, music, and elements were established at the end of the 19th century and remain fully in use. It's a festival that will stir your emotions and make you feel something indescribable.
