Sant Feliu Sasserra Witches' Fair

A cultural event where street theater, history and the best artisan products meet in Sant Feliu Sasserra, a small town in Bages.

All cultures have believed in a supernatural reality that intervenes in their affairs. Some powers of a beneficial or malefic order that have had an impact on the daily life of humanity.

At the beginning of the 17th century, in a context of demographic, social, economic and religious crisis, a series of witchcraft trials were carried out in Catalonia and Europe. In Lluçanès it was the ordinary justice system that initiated the trials and enforced the sentences, which is why the witches were hanged and not burned. Cosme Soler, alias Tarragó, discoverer of witches, in 1618 he performed in Sant Feliu Sasserra

Between the years 1616 and 1622, some four hundred women from all over Catalonia were accused and executed for being considered witches.

On November 1, in Sant Feliu Sasserra, those women, accused and persecuted by justice, are remembered and a free theatrical recreation of events that took place almost four hundred years ago is held.

But the party starts the day before. The Witch Festival is celebrated on the night of October 31. This year a new edition is being held, the Q-Fois Cultural Association therefore invites everyone to the show 'Migrare' by the company Cia Maduixa.

After the show, at the Ateneu, you can enjoy a concert with Les que missing band and Dj Rutxo.

On day 1, you can visit the Witches' Fair all day long. Stalls selling artisan products, local commerce and witches.

Theatrical performances are the main focus of the fair. Every year a story related to the witch hunt is told. A story that changes every year, but always tries to take the public to the rural society of the 17th century.

The town of Sant Feliu Sasserra is a small town in Bages. In addition to enjoying the theatrical performances that the villagers put on, it is also a good opportunity to enjoy the landscape of the town, its centuries-old streets and an unbeatable rural environment.

If your agenda does not allow you to visit the town during these two days, you can always learn about the history linked to witchcraft by visiting the Bruixeria Interpretation Center. Open since 2008, the center aims to answer the question of who the witches were. What relationship is there between witches and other beings such as elves, giants, fairies, water women and, above all, wise women, experts in health, medicinal, healers, healers and midwives.

The visit is complemented by a suggestive montage that brings to life the rituals and practices associated with witchcraft in a very experiential and shocking way, and also the most terrible part of its persecution: the torture and death of the women condemned for practicing witchcraft. witchcraft.

A multimedia montage, with a system of simultaneous projections, voice-over and programmed sound and light effects, will transport you, through the narration of real events described, to the criminal trials of the witches of Lluçanès. These 17th century processes are kept in the Menéndez Pelayo Library in Santander, constituting the most complete set of documents that have been preserved on witchcraft in Catalonia and one of the most interesting in Europe.
