Holy Week in Tarragona 2024

Tradition and spirituality coexist in the city during Holy Week, celebrations that most people from Tarragona live intensely, regardless of their religious beliefs.

On Palm Sunday, the various Stations of the Cross organized by the brotherhoods, brotherhoods and guilds that are part of the Association of Holy Week Associations of Tarragona begin to be celebrated.

But, without a doubt, the most important of all the demonstrations that take place during these days is the Holy Burial Procession on Good Friday. The first documented proof of the celebration of this procession through the streets of the Part Alta (old town) is from the year 1550.

Currently, more than 4,000 people are grouped into 13 guilds, brotherhoods and congregations carrying 20 mysteries in this procession. The steps are preceded by the armed men who break the silence with the sound of their timpani.

This procession is considered one of the most important in the Mediterranean and was declared a "Traditional Festival of National Interest" by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1999 and reclassified in 2010 as a "Heritage Element of National Interest". In 2009 the whole of Holy Week in Tarragona was declared a "Festival of National Tourist Interest" by the Generalitat.
