Holy Week in La Granadella

La Granadella celebrates Holy Week once again, with the now traditional "Desclavament"!

This town of Les Garrigues, with about 700 inhabitants, is dedicated to the representation of Lo Desclavament on Good Friday night and the Encuentro procession on Easter Sunday.

Hundreds of people, especially residents of the town, but also from other towns, experience these two deeply rooted and emblematic acts with emotion and devotion.

These two acts were declared Heritage Festive Elements of National Interest by the Generalitat in 2017. And they give identity and particularize the Holy Week of Granadella, and the "Desclavament" becomes a unique act in Catalonia, documented since the 18th century according to the documentation deposited in the Archive of the Bishopric of Lleida.

The "Desclavament", a ritual consisting of lowering Christ from the cross, an articulated image that once unclaved is placed in a glass urn in front of the main altar of the parish church, is the act prior to the departure of the procession. of the Good Friday Burial.

The Encuentro Procession is celebrated on Easter Sunday. The priest, once the mass is over, leaves the church with the Sacred Form inside the Monstrance and the singers singing the Pange Lingua. Take a walk around behind the church. Then, in the opposite direction, the Sorrowful Virgin comes out, in this case dressed in blue and not black like on Holy Saturday.
