Fires and Verbena of Sant Isidre in Prats de Lluçanès

The Fires and the Festival of Sant Isidre is the name given in Prats de Lluçanès to the events that take place in this town on the night of May 14, the eve of the saint's feast day.

A genuine tribute to the rural and farming roots of Prats de Lluçanès. A neighborhood evening of warmth and conviviality that keeps alive an ancient agricultural tradition, now almost extinct in the rest of Catalonia.

Long before becoming a neighborhood celebration, the Sant Isidre bonfires were a rural ritual of protection and defense. In ancient times, these bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits that threatened the spring harvests.

Main Acts

Today, the festival is celebrated in the streets and in farmhouses, with a simple character and far removed from great formalities, focused on neighborly coexistence:

• The collection of junk: In the days leading up to it, children and neighbors from each neighborhood collect wood, old furniture and other materials to prepare and pile up the bonfire.
• The lighting of bonfires in neighborhoods and farmhouses: Unlike the single fire of Sant Joan, for Sant Isidre several bonfires are lit simultaneously (starting at 10 pm). The spectacle creates a mosaic of light scattered throughout the neighborhoods of the town center and also in some farmhouses in the surrounding area.
• Community dinners and fireworks: The bonfire becomes the central meeting place for neighbors, who share an open-air dinner. The classics are usually present: toasted bread, sausage, flatbread, and good wine, all accompanied by the firecrackers set off by the young people.
• The solemn office (May 15): The following morning, the festive atmosphere gives way to the religious celebration, with a mass in honor of the patron saint, often accompanied by the singing of the Gozos de Sant Isidre.

Heritage and social value

The Sant Isidre Festival in Prats has significant anthropological value and is included in the Cultural Heritage Map due to its unique character: Prats de Lluçanès is one of the few Catalan municipalities that still keeps it alive. While in many other places (including nearby villages) the tradition has been lost, in Prats this ancient rural ritual has been adapted as a tool for social cohesion and neighborhood identity, becoming an intimate and family-oriented prelude to the major summer festivities.
