Festivities of Sant Sebastià de El Pont de Suert

From 19/01/2024 to 21/01/2024
El Pont de Suert

The Sant Sebastià festival is a deeply rooted tradition in the Pont de Suert. The Brotherhood of Sant Sebastià dates back to the year 1503, founded by the parish priest of Cirés, Aparicio Navarro, in order to bury the deceased.

The festival of Sant Sebastià in El Pont de Suert combines elements of religious tradition with elements of gastronomic tradition, in a celebration that lasts three days and brings together more than 600 men, heads of families.

Every year, this event begins on January 19, with a eve dinner held in the brotherhood building.

The festival continues on the 20th, the day of Sant Sebastià, which begins with a breakfast at 8:30 a.m., in which all the brothers participate and which consists of a menu made up of dishes from traditional Pontarine cuisine: soups bread, lamb legs and girella. Next, at 11:30 a.m., a mass is celebrated and then a procession with the image of Sant Sebastià takes place, which runs through all the streets of the town. Next, lunch is made for all the brothers and, at night, dinner.

The activities dedicated to the saint on the 21st consist of the traditional breakfast and lunch, with the peculiarity that that day at the noon meal the new priors are named. Those in charge of appointing them are the four priors who have managed the brotherhood during the year and the method to do so is by giving an apple. And on the same day a mass is celebrated to remember all the brothers who have died throughout the year.
