Festival of Sant Antoni de Ascó

The festival of Sant Antoni de Ascó has managed to preserve traditions that go back generations. It is recognized as a heritage festival of national interest.

The festival, which is unique among all the towns in the Tarragona region, has a series of characteristic features that make it unique, such as the survival of the Clavari and Mayorales figures, in charge of the organization; the fold, with the collection of firewood throughout the town; the traditional Tres Tombs, with the blessing of the animals and the blessed bread; the traditional and popular horse races, donkeys and meetings, the only ones in the Ribera de Ebro that have never ceased to take place; the lighting of the bonfire in the square that burns for three days without interruption while the jota de Ascó is danced, with its own music and dance.

The biggest winter festival becomes paradigmatic by perfectly combining devotion to the Saint with playful, pagan activity. In 2010 it was awarded the distinction of Heritage Festival of National Interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya.
