Vilafranca del Penedès Rooster Fair 2025

As tradition dictates, around Sant Tomàs, Vilafranca del Penedès celebrates the centuries-old Fira del Gall.

On December 20th and 21st, 2025, Vilafranca del Penedès will celebrate the 361st edition of the Rooster Fair, one of the region's most deeply rooted and beloved traditions. Organized by the Town Hall's Tourism Department, the fair is a vibrant festival that celebrates the culture and gastronomy of the Penedès region.

The event revolves around the Penedès Rooster with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), a native bird that has become a symbol of quality and local heritage. With its flavorful and healthy meat, raised free-range and fed on grape seeds, the Penedès Rooster is the pride of the region and the undisputed star of the fair.

Food and wine: a perfect pairing

The Rooster Fair is a great showcase for poultry cuisine and wines from the Penedès Designation of Origin. At the Gastronomic Exhibition, five local restaurants will prepare dishes with Penedès Rooster and other free-range poultry, which can be sampled at the fair or purchased at the Gastroshop.

The wines—white, red, rosé, and sparkling—can be tasted both at Celler Penedès, located in the Plaza del Vino, and at the Wine Fair itself. The combination of culinary tradition and wine culture makes the fair a unique sensory experience that captivates locals and visitors alike.

A proclamation with a popular soul

The opening address for this year's festival aims to appeal to audiences of all ages. It will be presented as a collective narrative recounting the story of Tomasot the Rooster and Ballarica the Hen, two figures from Vilafranca's festive bestiary linked to the Rooster Fair. The event will take place on Wednesday, December 17th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Vinseum Auditorium. Hosted by actress Clara Cols, the event will feature sculptor Dolors Sans, dancers from both past and present, costume designer Maria Rosa Casulleras, musician and composer Paton Felices, and choreographer Neus Fransi.

The celebration will begin at 6:45 p.m. in Jaume I Square with a solemn dance by the two figures, accompanied by the Maria Dolors Calvet Municipal School of Music Band. This will serve as a prelude to and transition into the opening proclamation. After the dance, Gall Tomasot and Gallina Ballarica will remain at the entrance to the Vinseum.

The Chicken Coop and the shop window competition

Following its success last year, the Galliner returns with the aim of becoming the highlight of the Fira afternoon. The event will combine the humor of comedians Oye Sherman and Alba Segarra with a wine tasting featuring wines from the Penedès DO and a musical performance by renowned DJ John Jacobsen. The window display game and competition will also return, this year entitled "Where are the Crests?", an initiative that encourages the public to discover shops and notable spaces in the town center and vote for the most original displays. You can participate until December 21st.

Finally, on Sunday, a new edition of the Festive Feather Bestiary Show will take place, featuring the Diablos del Valle del Corb, the Griu Petit de Tarragona, and the Garrafó de Premià de Mar. Also geared towards families, the Rooster Fair weekend will offer children's workshops for painting and personalizing a rooster's comb, as well as a Catalan bowling activity. In addition, over 90 craft stalls will be open along Avenida de Catalunya throughout the weekend.
