Girella del Pont de Suert Fair

The Girella Fair, which takes place every year on the third or fourth Sunday in October, is intended to promote tourism and trade, as well as to spread the traditions and cultural heritage of Pont de Suert and its area of influence.

This fair is an exhibition of mountain life, focusing on the ancient trades linked to the rural and livestock world. It is divided into five sectors or thematic areas: the girarla, the main product of the fair, together with the Brotherhood of San Sebastián; traditional trades, which reflect life in the mountains; local commerce; livestock; and an exhibition area dedicated to the history of Pont de Suert.

The girarla is a typical sausage made with rice and lamb, originally from the Pyrenees, both in Lleida and the Aragonese region, and whose origins are lost in time. During the fair, a live demonstration of the process of making this sausage is carried out, followed by a tasting for visitors.

In addition to the main activities, the Fair also includes various events, including the appointment of the Mayoral de los Pirineos, a figure who was formerly the shepherd in charge of watching over the fattened cattle, especially oxen and horses. Currently, this honorary title is awarded annually to a relevant person who, in a symbolic way, contributes to preserving, recovering and dignifying the way of life in the mountains.
