Dance of the Morisca in Gerri de la Sal

18/08/2024
Baix Pallars (Gerri de la Sal)

The legends that surround this dance place it in remote times, at the time of Muslim rule over the lands of Catalonia.

The dance says that to dance a Morisca it is necessary to repeat the chorus 13 times. Of course, in Gerri de la Sal the afternoon of the third day of the Festival was entirely dedicated to dancing Moriscas, and that the entire town participated making as much noise as possible coincide with the kick on the floor given by the dancer in the last note..

The tradition of beginning dancing with a single couple is maintained, with the usual movements towards the ends of the square, and a second dance has been incorporated with the general participation of the people of the town. Shotgun shots continue to accompany the last heel and toe of each throw, and the old custom of throwing candies that children take from the ground is also maintained.

Currently, the representation of the adaptation of the legend of the Morisca is made, made by the writer Pep Coll and with the participation of the inhabitants of the town.

The Baile de la Morisca is held on the third Sunday of August.
