Centelles Pine Festival
The Centelles Pine Festival, declared a Heritage Festival of National Interest in Catalonia, is held in December, with its main event taking place on the morning of December 30. On that day, the most beautiful pine tree in the region is cut down and, once decorated, it is offered to Santa Coloma, the patron saint of Centelles. During the descent from the forest to the village, the route is celebrated with the firing of blunderbusses and muzzle-loading shotguns.
History
The first written references to the Pine Festival date back to 1751, and since then it has been linked to the feast of Santa Coloma. The celebration may have much older origins, with reminiscences of tree worship and pagan fertility rituals related to the winter solstice and the regeneration of nature.
The Centelles Pine Festival was officially recognised as a Heritage Festival of National Interest by the Government of Catalonia, first on 17 November 1987 (DOGC no. 922) and later on 25 May 2010 by AGREEMENT GOV/102/2010.
